Tourism: Continuous increase

Foto: Alexander Römisch

Tourism is one of the most prosperous branches in the region. Especially overnight stays see a continuous growth - contrary to the Saxon figures. This accounts mostly to tourists interested in culture as Görlitz offers an exceptional architectural cityscape and many cultural events. Ideally, Görlitz is also starting point for tours to the surrounding regions of Upper Lusatia, Poland and the Czech Republic as well as to cities such as Dresden or Wroclaw.

Numerous, large-scale endeavors undertaken by the Euro City of Görlitz-Zgorzelec help accelerate this development. Visions are united, for example, in the large-scale project Lake Berzdorf. Water from the Neisse River has been diverted to the former open-pit mine located to the south of the twin city since 2002. In 2011, it will be one of the largest bodies of water in Saxony with a total surface area of nearly 1,000 hectares. A yacht harbor is to be built on the south shore of the lake. Investors interested in building and operating hotels, vacation cottages, theme parks for tourists, a golf course, or a campground have found the right location here. more information

An additional highlight for Görlitz`s tourism will be the 3rd Saxon State Exhibition 2011 "Via Regia: Motion and encounter." Its motto revolves around the historic medieval trade route which ran from Kiev to Santiago de Compostela. Back then, it was already very important for Europe`s integration.

The increased importance of convention tourism is being accounted for in the scheduled renovation and privatization of Görlitz`s Art Nouveau Stadthalle. It is to become the central site for conferences in Upper Lusatia and Lower Silesia. more information

Görlitz also supports tourism with the specific creation of attractive programs and services.
