Görlitz` "Little Semperoper" was opened in 1851. It acquired both its fame and its nickname from its glittering ambience, which comes close to equalling that of the Semperoper in Dresden.

The ceiling is elaborately decorated with artistic ornaments, painted heads and the figures of the muses, while the crystal chandeliers reflect the light of the auditorium.

The musical theatre produces operas, operettas, musicals and dance performances for the Lower Silesian / Upper Lusatian cultural area, in addition to concerts by the New Lusatian Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Guest performances and plays are also staged in Görlitz by the cooperative theatres of Bautzen and Zittau.
